Salt Point State Park, situated on the California Coast in far northern Sonoma County, is one of the best places in northern California to find examples of "tafoni," which is the name geologists give to the complex weathered sandstone formations exhibited in many of these photographs. The name originally came from Corsica, though tafoni-like rocks can be found in many parts of the world. The process of tafoni formation seems to be a bit controversial, but my layman's interpretation is that it is the result of uneven calcium distribution: the areas of higher concentrations of calcium erode less quickly than those of lower concentrations, creating the fascinating and beautiful formations that attract my photographer's eye. |
